Dixie, you got that right. I think that in the 70s the bulk of America laughed at Archie Bunker (and thought he was a big fool). Now, what he says make a whole lot of sense. The writers of that show were just brilliant. Quite a feat to write something that holds up as well--perhaps better--than the time of its release.
That was great, and Carroll O'Connor gave the all-time best TV performance of a character ever. (Consider that the man was actually a flaming liberal himself! NOW you see what an acting job he was doing, eh?)
My whole family watched 'ALL IN THE FAMILY' while it was first being aired and I remember distinctly how the whole country was meant to think Archie was a buffoon, and Meathead was "supposed" to be the voice of reason.
Imagine the surprise of the producers when a large segment of the country embraced Archie and even a faux presidential campaign was created for him. Here in our house we had a red, white and blue coffee mug that read "Archie Bunker For President", and you could find that slogan in many places on many things.
As the show went on, the writers and producers began to make Meathead seem foolish more and more, because they could see that a large part of their audience agreed in large part with what Archie said.
The following video popped up on the screen as an option after this 'All In The Family' clip finished playing:

You should definitely watch that! It didn't tell me anything I didn't already know about Obama voters, but it did prove the point with clarity.
I have actually seen that video before. I wish I could say that it shocked me... but not so much. Most people have NO IDEA who they are voting for or what their (announced) policies are on anything.
Interesting stuffs about how the writing on All In The Family. Thank you for sharing that!!!!
More relevant today then back then. How little has been gleaned over the years! Ironically when this show aired I thought he was nuts. Wow Robin!
